A lot of women hate their cycle, but did you know that in Ayurveda it is referred to as one of the most powerful tools for renewal of yourself and crucial to health and happiness. A healthy cycle is a sign of vital vibrant physical health.

Your period is a window to your overall body health

Previous blog post we talked about listing and following the flow of your body, certain periods you can be more intense, others you need more rest and restore. The female cycle is all about getting rid of the old and allow the new to come. M.D. Vrinda Devani who studied Ayurveda under Dr. Vasant Lad says:

“Your period is the biggest window to the overall health of your body. You can learn how your body adapted (or didn’t adapt) to what you ate, stressors you encountered, travel and other changes in your schedule, seasonal changes, and so much more during the previous month.”


I agree with Vrinda Devani, as we can learn so much from our own body. By living more balanced you can lighten your flow, lesson your cramps, clear up your skin, and feel more calm and present. It is important to give your body plenty of rest and treat yourself with delicious nutritious food during this period.

  1. Your mind is maybe tricking you in take-away food and unhealthy snacks, but we all understand that during your cycle natural wholefoods are the best for our bodies. Be wise and buy only fresh vegetables and fruits to nourish yourself with.
  2. During your cycle, it is better not to take any synthetic hormones, as they can lead to a heavier flow, more cramping, mood swings, and even ovarian cysts.
  3. It is also better to avoid dairy products from your diet. You feel more uncomfortable and your cycle feels heavier when consuming dairy products, as dairy clogs the respiratory and digestive system. It also can cause cystic breasts and acne.
  4. Choice the right proteins, especially during this period of the month. This doesn’t necessarily means becoming vegetarian or vegan. But as I always say it is good to experiment with what works for you, you might one to try it out for one month. When you have less cramps, feels less heavy and has a more comfortable flow you might want to consider stop eating animal products. If you like your meat; buy products that are hormone free and from grass-fed animals. Your local butcher can help you with finding the right meat for you.
  5. You will get a poor skin health if you are having a lack of high quality fats in your diet. Amenorrhea, hormonal imbalance, ovarian cysts, and a few other common women’s health issues all have a link to fat. Adding avocado, olive oil, or even grass-fed butter can be helping to balance your female cycle.
